The trauma of life-threatening accidents, violence, or assault can lead to dysregulation in the nervous system, hypervigilance to danger, nightmares, and distressing flashbacks. This may lead to a condition known as PTSD, which can be treated with therapies like EMDR (eye movement desensitization) and Brainspotting. When such events happen, there are recent event treatments that help keep PTSD from developing. Not all traumas are from sudden and dramatic incidents. However, chronic and sometimes overwhelming experiences of verbal and emotional abuse, shame, and invalidation can also result in trauma (often called “complex trauma”). These can also be treated, even when there are no explicit memories associated with this experience. When patterns of emotional distress, triggering, anxiety, anger, escalation, and often addiction take place, underlying complex trauma is often involved. Our support can help uncover and treat these, helping relieve the distressing symptoms that have developed.
